I have too much on my plate. How can I keep all these plates spinning? Their world is on a platter. Step up to the plate. Is that gold-plated? Clear your plate. Can I take some of that off your plate?

US society is obsessed with colloquial sayings and the plate seems to be quite a popular topic. It’s no wonder we have an obesity epidemic in the US. People are constantly thinking about plates even when not eating.

When writing for a large audience, it’s important to avoid colloquialism. They may appear to have universal understanding within the culture or country of origin, but they’re often impossible to translate to other languages.

It is my belief that we should respond to such colloquialisms with one of the phrases:

  • You are making me hungry.
  • Did you eat the garnish?
  • But what about bowls?
